Marguerite Riel Centre

The Canadian Metis Heritage Corp.

The Canadian Metis Heritage Corp. was formed in 1995 to address the intergenerational impact of residential schools, to facilitate the healing process, and to prevent future abuse of Aboriginal peoples in Melfort and the surrounding region.  Melfort is a gateway between North and South Saskatchewan, which is a factor in achieving consistently high participation rates at the organization.  The Canadian Metis Heritage Corp. is a non-profit, registered charity organization.  The Canadian Metis Heritage Corp. follows the Muttart Foundation's code of ethical fund raising and financial responsibility developed by the Canadian Centre of Philanthropy.

Our Mandate:

To promote healing and wellness primarily to Metis and First Nations people in North East and North Central Saskatchewan.

The Marguerite Riel Centre

The Marguerite Riel Centre was named after Louis Riel’s wife, Marguerite Monet dit Bellehumeur (1861—1886).  Marguerite is one of the heroines of Batoche.  She protected children and looked after the wounded as Canadian soldiers fired canons and bullets at Métis men in battle and at women and children still occupying homes and churches.1

The Marguerite  Riel Centre was established in June 1998 to provide on-going educational and support services to improve the health and well being of primarily Aboriginal adults, children, and families. The Marguerite Riel Centre primarily serves adults and children by offering adult programming in life skills, comprehensive healing programs, nutrition, counselling (e.g. one-on-on, group), focusing therapy, Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) parenting programs, child care, cultural experiences and events, advocacy, and specialized integrated services.

Our Mission Statement:

To promote wellness and balance to those we serve mentally, emotionally, physically & spiritually utilizing our individual gifts & to ensure we serve the people with honesty and respect in all matters.
